02 vw jetta 1.8t why does my turbo have a strange noise?

latelyl I have notice a strange sound coming out of my turbo specially when I full throtle I have about 50k on a 02 its auto . before it was just the clean air sound comming out of the engine but now it doesnt sound clean ?? any clues????

The turbo fans are somewhat disposable parts they'll go bad after a while. 50K is a little early, but not unusually so 75K is the number typically mentioned .

If this is the problem, the turbos will must be replaced. you may be able to buy OEM parts and replace in kind, but you may also look at upgrading the turbos for increased performance. If you do not have an expanded warranty, this may not be a bad way to go.

I had an '03 and it made a sort of high pitch "whirring" sound, I guess kind of like a blender, when I could speed up faster than average. If that is what it sounds like, it is just the turbo kicking in.man, I loved that car :

First, check your air filter. Also be sure that the oil & oil filter is changed at least every 3,000 miles. You may be hearing either "bearing noise" or the turbo "wastegate".

Vw has had some problems with the oiling systems on their Turbo cars. be sure you use the correct oil and change it regular. I believe VW says seven to ten thousand miles but with the Turbo they can be shorter. Call your local dealer and ask. Also if you change the oil your self be sure you use the correct oil. Your turbo is about to die.. Take it in now not afterward because you're out of warranty. Oil satrvation is common in vws and the stupid manual stating change every 7k bull crap. Your oil feed line is most likely clogged and the turbo is wearing out or one of your intercooler pipes is knocked loose causeing the sound. Get her checked out before you pay 1600 plus labor.
