1984 Porsche 944 five speed? |
|
I'm thinking of purchasing this car, I have taken a look at it in person some times, it seems a bit weathered but nothing a new paint job could not fix. The interior is aged, and the car has about 150,000 miles on it. The seller is asking $3200. Do you think this is reasonable? Also do you have any tell for what to look for, common problems with porsche 944's, I do not know much about the subject.

I am going against most of the rest of the responders here. I think around $3,000 for a hard 1984 Porsche 944 is a great price, but you may want to expect to do more or less continual maintenance to keep it running properly. but, this is true of any 22 year old car.
As for rust, Porsches after 1976 use galvanized sheet metal, so rust is nearly never an issue. I had a 1978 Porsche 924 that had no rust whatsoever, and that was after driving it in upstate NY winters.
You will have lots of other repairs, and the 944 will require an costly timing belt substitute every 30K miles. If you do not do it yourself, expect $500 for this substitute.
Nearly all parts are available for the 944, so do not worry about that. If you enjoy the car and are wanting to do most of the work yourself, this is a satisfying car. it's peppy, handles great and has decent brakes. If you're wanting to use up a bit more money, look for a 1986 or afterward model. There was a big upgrade for the 1985.5 model, which included more power, better brakes, stronger ball joints and a better interior. but, it'll most likely cost you at least another $2,000 for one of these afterward models.
Finally, it is generally great if you may be able to find a Porsche that has not been beaten up on racetracks. Ask questions and see what answers you get, and look for signs that it may have been raced. these are racing seat belts, holes where a role bar may have been attached and painted over numbers on the doors/bodywork.
I like older Porsches and there's a great community of holders out there to support you and assist you crack problems. As long as you're wanting to do the work to keep your Porsche running, you'll find it educational and satisfying. If you can't/won't do the work yourself, the car will nearly surely be too costly.

look under the hood if you see any rust on the sides don’t purchase it.
If you thinking of new paint job, the price your paying is a bit too much I will say 2800

DON'T purchase IT.
Porsches, particularly the 944's, do not do well when neglected. If the owner cared about their car, they could have kept up the paint and interior.
Also, 150k is WAY up there, for the bullet evidence Porsche engines. presuming it has not been re built already, at most, you'd have another 10k before you had to have a big engine and most likely transmission re build. I could NEVER trust any car that does not have a complete service history and meticulous maintenance. Has it generally had new spark plugs, filters, fluids and if needed belts [timing chains and spark plug wires every 30k? Are the shock absorbers and bushings sound? Has the owner seen to any mechanical, body and transmission issues?
Porsches of that era are recognized for rust and abuse. Bubbles anywhere under the paint point to the presence of rust, the shock towers and body like any car are recognized to have rust issues. do not purchase a car with rust present it costs an unbelievable amount to have carefully removed. Stressed and bent suspension parts and badly repaired body damage are common.
Besides which, a great many of the 944's anythed but real Porsche performers. they're frequently accused of being saddled with "lawnmower engines", and only some number had the desireable, 3.0 L six cylinder.
Also, the repairs are frequently costly, so is bodywork, upholstery and quality paint. If you bought the car now, you could most likely wind up putting another five or 6k into the car to ensure it stayed driveable.
I could stay away unless you did some broad research. Talk to the mechanic who worked on the car, see how frequently the car was in for service and what they think of it. as well, make sure to get a pre buy inspection done by a Porsche expert get your local Porsche club to recomment one . If the mechanic is unwilling to support the car, or the seller refuses to have the car inspected, walk away. it is a basket case that will ruin you and it can be so as is.
In short: be cautious, do your research. generally remember that with exotic cars, it is not the buy price that kills you it is the maintenance costs.

The early 944 were a bit problematic. be sure you have service records.NOT just oil changes.otherwise things can get costly quickly.

This is a money pit. You really do not want that early a 944 afterward ones are better and unless you have lots of money for maintenance, you really are not purchasing a car you may be able to pay for to own. fix costs on these cars may be brutal. If you doubt me, call up a Porsche shop and ask them the price for a a clutch job and b a water pump.
With a used Porsche, there is only one way to go:
1. purchase the nicest cleanest car you may be able to pay for.
2. Ask for service records
3. Have the car completely checked out previous to buy.
"There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche".
If you like the 944, purchase a clean, low mileage 944 Turbo and be happy.
Do NOT, don't, purchase this car. Free could be too much.

I'm Porsche fanatic, but I am sorry to say do not purchase This Car.
At 150,000 miles it may have a number problems, leaking engine and transmission oil seals, etc. you do not need a car that bleeds oil all over your driveway. Other related problems caused by age, fuel injection, alternator, electronics, interior, clutch, etc. it may turn out to be a money pit..
If you choose to purchase it I will sell you all the parts you need since I am in the Porsche parts business, all OEM parts.
In any way I don't recommend this car.

If you are expecting it to be in excellent condition, prepared to drive, do not think that way. If you are wanting to fix it weekend job? etc, then I could still stay away. you may be able to find one alike for 2000 dollars and really should be less. as well, there are already rebuilt 944s for about 12000 dollars. they are good if you do not like to get really dirty, and I am serious about that.

I recently bought and early 80's porsche, mine is in alike condition, different model although, and will tell you now, GET ALL SERVICE RECORDS. be sure everything was maintained engine wise or you'll have a big expense, porsche parts aren't cheap, little things can become costly and time consuming tracking down. don't purchase this car thinking it'll be a main means of transportation without having another car to use if this one breaks. they're an great car and if mechanically taken care of, may be a dependable car. And they're fun as heck to drive and they're a head turner. 3200$ is a great price you may be able to talk them down a little although.

I think you may want to go for it, but do not pay what the seller wants..if the interior is that worn you may want to be able to talk him down. Drive the car 1st, then get a mechanic that knows 944's to do a pre buy inspection. I bought my 1st P car three years ago, and I bought an '87 928. If you may be able to do the maintenance yourself you may want to be good...plus do not worry about paint till the car is definetly running.a running car is better than one that looks great, but runs like crap. I do all the maintenance on my car, and my engine is more complex than the 944. If you want some help check out some forums on Porsches.
