1991 Mazda 929S oxygen sensor issues. Help please? |
|
My oxygen sensors are going out, or at least one of them is and I do not know where it's on the real car, and I do not know how to get ahold of substitute ones, I can not find anywhere that has parts for the "S" model, it is pretty rare.

I know for sure they have not been changed in at least 150k miles, the car hit 364k miles this last week.

they should be in the manifold or front pipe up near the engine and outside of the dealer you may be able to get a common o2 sensor and wire it in

I have two Mazda's with over 125K on each of them and I have never had to replace an O2 sensor still.
I worked on cars with over 250K on them, and never had to replace an O2 sensor on them either.
Now plugs, wires, air cleaners, timing belts, coils, caps, rotors and air filters yes.
I am not saying you do not need one, I'm just proposing that you be sure all of the regular maintenance was done 1st.
Then use either the "generic" sensor, or one for the 929 model. The only times that a more particular part could be obliged usually is when the parts description could say words to the effect "except for 929S".

4 cylinder model the O2 sensor is on the Exhaust Manifold a three wire job that looks nearly like a spark plug.
On six cylinder modle the O2 sensors two are in the head pipes just beside the Cataylitic Converters
They fail about every 120,000 miles on average normal life span or if you have a wasted set of injectors flooding the engine, or extreme Heat.
Not hard to replace but you need the Special Service Tool a Slotted Socket particularly for the job .
