1998 Subaru Legacy Wagon? |
|
Thinking of purchasing this car. Is subaru a good car company? The car only has 63,000 miles on it. could it be a dependable car for me? I go up to the mountains all the time If anybody has some experience with Subaru, good or bad, let me know
Thanks.

I have a '92 Subaru SVX and the car still runs excellent. After having this car I can tell you with all honesty that I'll NEVER go back to two wheel drive again. AWD is the sh t. Also the compression percentage on my engine is high and only takes PREMIUM octane 92 gas ONLY.
Can't go wrong with Subaru. I think my next car could be the WRX. Black, of course, haha.

Pretty much any Subaru is a good car. Look at how they're in comparison to nearly anybody else. Awesome cars I think.

Yes, Subaru is pretty good. They do have some minor problems that are common like oil leaks, noisy valvetrain, etc. but in general they aren't bad. be sure you test the transmission completely before purchasing this car.

subarus are the kind of car that will rust through, and still run. great in snow, great up hills, most of subarus transmissions are geared not for speed or for torque, but for towing. this turns out to work really well in bad weather.
before you purchase it, look at the oil. does it have a coffee like color to it? this indicates it has a bad head gasget problem, and they are expsensive. before you seal the deal get down on the ground, and look up under the car, at the under carraige, the muffler, the frame, the shocks the springs, struts basicly the whole suspension, the frame, shortly, anything metal, look for any extra or flaking rust. you'll most likely see a little surface rust, that is normal. but if you may be able to place your hand on what seems rust, rub your hand on it, and take your hand away and see rust in the palm of your hand, you're looking at a car with problems. theres a way you may be able to go to a restoration place and get the rust fixed, but its nearly generally costly, and if the car was in that condition for too long, often its not worth repairing.
parts are generally exspensive. I have a 1996 subaru impreza non turbo and, not only can I not find a fix manual anywhere, but my spark plugs and spark plug wires are nearly three times costly than for my husbands car 2003 dodge neon where its a foreign car, and a rare one at that, you'll generally have to do a little digging for your parts. but subarus are strong running cars. if you start it up, and the car doesnt jump when you put it into gear, nothing in the engine bay shakes while its running and you have the hood up, the exaust coming out of the car when you hit the gas and take off isn't overly black, or a weird white, or a gray blue color all point to different, but bad things then you more than probably have a dependable subaru. mine has a small gas leak, and I am going to have to track it down. the week I went on vacation I let it sit, and it in some way lost a quarter of a tank. I know the fuel pump in it's good, I don't know where to start looking, but I know I will sooner or later find it. I bought it thinking i'd have to live without cup holders, because I didn't see any but it turns out, there are hide away cupholders up above the stereo bay, they pull right out. I call them magic cupholders, because I didn't learn I had them till after I bought them, and they magicly appeared when I pulled the little plastic peice they are attached to out. I also found a dollar bill way back behind the cup holders, and when I removed the cupholder tray its removeable I got the dollar to come out, so I guess I got a dollar off my buy price, more or less. I got my subaru impreza for $1900. there nothed wrong with it, and a couple weeks after I bought it I took it to a mechanic just to be sure. mechanic said it was OK. all this stuff I am finding out about it I learned on my own and with my husbands help. if you really love your car, you will find what is wrong with it before a mechanic does.
does your back seat lay down and expose the trunk? ITS NOT just. mine doesnt. it wasnt an choice on the imprezas, just on the wagons. pout I have a little four door sedan.
one more thing: if it has a sun roof or a moon roof, the seals in those go bad about once every year, and regardless what you do, or if you don't mess with opening or closing it, if you just leave it alone, it'll still sooner or later leak. if you're purchasing a subaru with a sunroof, be sure you check your seals before you purchase it, and keep checking them on a regular base.

Once you purchase a subaru you'll never be happy with another car. they're really great. dependable, great in the summer and winter. Great on gas. I lived in the catskills in NY and lived at the top of a mountain, subaru is the only car I could trust going up there. It does great on hairpin curves in snow and ice. I owned four of them and can honestly say they're one of the best cars ever made, just be sure it has had all of its regular service. A car that hasn't been properly maintained can cost lots of money.
