I have owned four Volvos: 1966 122S, 1967 122S, 1998 V70 T5, 2006 V70R and
I've owned three BMWs: 1978 530i, 1985 M6, 1995 520i
M3 Pros
MUCH better performance.
MUCH better handling.
It will impress some people more than the Volvo will.
M3 Cons
MUCH costly to own both because it is five years old and because it is a BMW fact of car ownership: the costly the car when new the more you will pay for the same service .
It's five years old and already has n miles on it.
T5 Pros
It's new.
GOOD performance in a car that does not attract police attention.
EXCELLENT bang for the buck.
More up to date safety systems.
T5 Cons
Poorer resale value.
Not studly.
Not as fun to drive nor should it be the M3 is a specific car .
As you may guess, between the two makes I have driven some hundred thousand miles. I really like the performance and handling of the BMW M series but I have moved on to Volvo's top performance cars for two reasons: they are so much cheaper to purchase new and to own I have never been impressed with BMW quality nor the added expense obliged to make up for the lack of it and, for me, the performance and handling are more than enough. This is particularly true in the '06 V70R with it is 4C suspension and 300 BHP I got it up to 152 MPH on the A7 in Germany. .
That said, to get the handling I wanted out of my '98 T5 I had to change out the suspension for more robust parts. The darned thing came with a soccer mom suspension. But no amount of aftermarket parts could ever bring my cost up to that of a BMW 540i wagon at the time that was the nearest comparable model .
Oh, and do not forget, it does not cost a whole lot to chip a T5 to add another 40 50 hp.
