The StreetPilot GPS ColorMap takes up where its sister product left off by boasting a razor sharp, high resolution, 16 color display for easy map reading. ColorMap works in an auto, truck, or van.Designed mainly for the car, the ColorMap improves on the StreetPilot's basemap info by adding exit info for the federal interstate highway system that lists available services like food, lodging, and service stations. At 1.3 pounds and nearly seven inches large, the GPS ColorMap is not tiny. The reason for the unit's bulk is the comparatively big 16 color backlit display, 1.8 inches high by 3.3 inches large, that leads the front of the device. The color screen serves up clear pictures that are much easier to interpret than those made by a grayscale display. it is much like looking at a regular road atlas, with red interstates, gray secondary roads, and light blue rivers crisscrossing a bright yellow background. A night mode switches the yellow background to black, and there are some number of levels of light that make the unit legible despite of the lighting we tested it in. as well, in our tests, the 12 channel GPS receiver took a amazingly long time to get satellite signals, but once they were locked in the unit precisely tracked our movements and never broke its lock when we passed through tunnels or heavily forested regions.
The map database included with the device holds most of the big highways and all of the interstates for the complete United States also as the more important city streets in big metropolitan regions. This limitations the device out of the box for use mainly for cross country travel. but, the map database may be extended via a cartridge slot in the battery compartment that accepts individually available eight MB or 16 MB cartridges. Garmin sells cartridges preloaded with in depth map info, or you may be able to purchase a blank cartridge and a MapSource MetroGuide CD ROM to download data from your PC to the GPS. The fitted database comes with info on interstate exits and labels big bodies of water, but MetroGuide upgrades add many more features like street level maps for complete cities, restaurant data, and the capability to pinpoint a particular address.
though the StreetPilot GPS ColorMap is easy to use and greatly correct, it has some number of shortcomings that detract from its in general value. An auto routing feature that lets users enter a departure point and destination to get directions could have been nice. As it's, users are forced to enter routes manually or download them from computer software that's matched with this device. The GPS ColorMap comes with a PC interface cable but no software to download. Most GPS devices in this price range offer pages and pages of data resulting from complex interior calculations, but this product offers only the moving map page and a Dashboard page that serves as a basic trip computer. For this price, we projected more.
