The 4WD on the Honda CRV is better improved over last not many year models and is good on gravel roads and light trails like to get to that favorite fishing hole. I still do not recommend this SUV for heavy off roading its weak in suspension rigidity.
The Forester will preform better off road but the gas mileage isn't as good as Honda's but you may find that this engine has more torque than Honda all although the Honda has lots of power for climbing over hills but watch the drop offs and high centers regions.

As for sepcs log onto Auto trader.com and do a side by side comparison

in my opinion, the crv2007 is a great fun to drive car, but the thing is it's better not to purchase fat cars like this but only worth five seats.

Good Luck.
