What is your real mileage? Characterize your maintenance/repair experience. Is there any advantage to the hybrid when most driving is highway, not city, and yearly mileage is 35,000 40,000?

apparently you answered your question "what is your real mileage?" by stating that it's 35,000 40,000.

Perhaps you meant fuel economy?

EPA highway for the 2006 Prius is 51MPG highway.
fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/22016.shtmlfueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/22016.shtml">fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/.

Only you may be able to compute your real fuel economy.

What car are you now driving? What is it is EPA highway MPG, and what MPG are you really getting? compute the % difference on your current car to the EPA numbers, then apply the same % difference to the Prius.
You can look up your current car here: fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/bymakemodelNF.shtmlfueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/bymakemodelNF.shtml">fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/b. presuming that you are in the US, anyways.

You can see what fuel economy other Prius holders are to get by viewing:

BTW: another poster suggested the 2004 prius group. I could tell against it, as that group was without an owner/moderator for at least two years now and the group became nothing but spam. I'd propose staying with the moderated as in the spammers are kept out groups toyota prius, Prius 2G, or 2006_Prius for general information/questions from real holders, Prius_Technical_Stuff for more technical questions about how it works, and some of the local/regional groups.

I have read articles on many car magazines and it says that if you live on a mountain town or a hilly town, the engine whines and doesn't perform well. I could reccomend the prius' competitor, the honda civic hybrid, it's so much better looking and about as enviorment friendly at 49 MPG as indicated by thier site.

unfortunately, the honda civic does not get anywhere near it is epa mpg.

if you most of your driving is hwy, you'd be better off to get a five sp corolla. About 10k cheaper, 40mpg on the hwy. if you need an auto, about 9k cheaper and 38 mpg on hwy.

I have about 46,000 miles on my 2003 Prius. in general, I average 48 49 mpg in the summer, and 37 38 mpg in the winter. This is lots of local driving with sporadic highway.

On trips that have been usually highway, I typically average over 50 mpg.

I replaced the tires last week and had a cranky ignition lock fixed. Other than that, it is been trouble free.

How you drive has an huge effect on your gas handling. Keep an eye on the instant mpg readout, and do not do things that send it close to zero unless you may help it.

Our real mileage differs from 45 to 51 mpg. with the better mileage in warmer weather. We now have 47,000 miles on it and have only rotated the tires and changed the oil. Nothing else. Nothing needed fix. Most of our miles are highway miles, not city. Now that gasoline sells for over $3 a gallon, we think this was a good buy.
