Are all Volkswagen Beatles standards? |
|
I've generally wanted a Volkswagen Beatle. My mom informed me that they're all standards. I hate standards. Is this true or is she just trying to make me want a different car?

One year they made an auto shift Beetle. I had one. They were not successful, as they had lots of problems with the transmission.
I'm not sure about the new Beetles.

No, but the standards will run Ringos around the automatics. They Paul away from the line faster.

No they aren't all standards. The beetle uses generally the same drivetrain engine and transmission as the VW Golf and Jetta. they're available in auto or standard shifts.
The old beetles were usually, but not all standard shifts. Back then auto transmissions weren't economical and robbed cars of a just % of their hp in transmitting power to the drive wheels. As the old beetles were modestly powered four cylinder engines not many purchasers were anxious to more diminish their performance by purchasing the automatics.
These days most auto transmissions are quite economical, and the new beetle's water cooled four cylinder is about three times as powerful. So the choice is really just a matter of what you favor.
Bye the bye. do not let a regular shift be a lifelong boogey man. Over the years I have taught some people how to drive stick shifts, and it rarely requires more than a couple of hours of instruction, then some practice on hills for a day or two.

In 1968 they made an auto stickshift. They had a one and a two and no clutch. If you are talking new beetle, yes they make automatics.

New or Old?
New Beetles are available with auto.
Old Beetles are nearly all standard, but some were made with "autostick". With the Autostick cars, you still had to shift gears with a gearshift, but there was no clutch pedal. they were really kind of difficult to drive because the "clutch" has been activated by touching the shift handle with your hand. If you touch the handle and do not take your foot off the gas, the engine will over rev. Autostick cars are rare now, and they tend to have maintenance problems, so it is most likely best to avoid them unless you are a collector.
Bottom Line: If you want an old Beetle, you'll be changing your gears.
Something else to think about.
Can you live without air conditioning? Old Beetles never came from the factory with A/C. Some people put after market A/C units in their cars, but Beetle engines are too weak for it to work well. With the A/C on, the engine will feel anemic and run hot and not last long .
I hope this helps.
Oh yeah
"Beatles" are people John, Paul, George and Ringo .
"Beetles" are cars.

Learn Standard. it is more fun anyways. My 1.8t New Beetle is a great and fun car to drive.
And if you do not want to learn standard they have them in auto.

I own a 1974 vw beelte with an auto stickshift. You still have to shift but it has a vacume operated clutch that works off of a switch on the gear shift.
I have never had trouble with it and I drive it all of the time. with regular maintenance everything on a vw bug will typically work for a long time.
I like it because few people have one.
btw my other ten cars are all stick shift.
I think it's humorous that majority of people think the only auto car I own was not avalible with an auto

If your talking about classic models there where three trim levels standard, deluxe, vert. The us only got the deluxe and vert trim level, abroad you could order the stripped down standard model. As far as trans starting in the early 60's you could get a autostick or manual, but autosticks are rarer, higher on maint, etc. Check out my links below for more info/cars.

The old Beetles were standards. Some had auto clutches, but still stick shift. The new beetles are either auto or standard. The automatics are pretty fast, and the standards are really fast.

Get a New Beetle they're a great fun to drive, great safety features for your mom, and the hippie vibe is there too. They come in auto and standard whatever you like. BTW it is really fun to drive a stick once you learn you do not know what you are missing.
