The 5V you typically see when oppening the hood of a A4 4cylinder, for example, means only five valves per cylinder. four x five 20 valves. This is difficult and some people assume it',s a V5 car.

No audi uses the same inline 4, v6, and v8 configurations, never heard of a 7cylinder motor in the audi lineup. They did have the inline five cylinder motor in the early years, both NA and turbocharged. They',ve recently revived the inline five in the all new TTRS, with plans to use it in other models.

The old inline five was one of audis best engines, they used it in many of their road and racing/rally cars with great success. Nothing sounds as bad as a greatly boosted Audi Sport Quattro S1 blasting through the treeline.

Audi has had inline 4',s and 5',s, with a V6 and a V8. The "W" configuration denoted a narrow angle engine, as opposed to the extensive of t common V engine.

Audi',s strange engine configurations typically extend to Wshaped engines rather than five or 7cylinder engines. Some Audi models have/had a W8 and a W12 motor, as did some Volkswagens.

Both Audi and Volvo had five cylinder cars in the late 80s.
