Are Volkswagen Jetta's good cars? |
|
I just got a 1996 Volkswagen Jetter five speed manual, black, moonroof, CD player for $1500.. With all the taxes, it was around $1900. I'm so excited. Is this a dependable car? Has anybody had problems?

You have a good car, those built from 1994 till 1998, were of a generation that was intended to be transport, not a mini luxury car. The big issue is ensuring that the timing belt and tensioner are in good form. usually, they could have been replaced by now, but, it being a used car and all, you don’t have way to confirm this.
Have the timing belt inspected, they may not be able to tell you that its new, but they sure can tell you if its worn and due for substitute. Timing belt failures are costly, if it requires substitute, also replace the frnt engine seals and the water pump, as these add little cost to the timing belt/tensioner substitute, but can save lots of money afterward when they fail trust me, if you do not replace them, they will fail before the timing belt does .
If you did not do so still, have the car inspected by an independent party to insure its safe and recommend whatever needed repairs may be needed. If you bought the base four cylinder, non turbo motor, then it should last you a while. In my experience with them in the dealership, you may want to get well over 200,000 miles with it, provided its in good form and you follow the suggestions from the factory about service.
Have it serviced by someone who understands VW, it doesn't must be the dealer, but someone who works on VW or Audi's every day. This will insure you have issues with the car dealt with in a manner that's benefical to you.
Congratulations on your buy, its a great road car. I wish you nothing but trouble free driving ahead. A car nut.

I've got friends with Jetta's and they have not had any problems. Did you run the serial numbers through to be sure the car hadn't been involved in any accidents? as well, did you have a mechanic look at it 1st. Any used car may be a lemon. You just have to check it out 1st.

Yeah they're dependable and I don't know about this Idiot on here but the cars are assembled in Puebla Mexico, that doesnt meen they're crap. Im Mexican and I could kick your for an ignorant comment like that. Ford's and Chevys have all there parts Made in Mexico and RedNecks can not stop purchasing them
Any ways back on subject, you have a really dependable MK3 Jetta that will run for ever as long as you givr it correct maintenance.
