i just found an rns d on ebay for 585. I could like to get an rns e but I just don't want to stomch a great for that radio now. My question is, I see that it says the rns d is a cd established maps where the rns e is dvd established. what is the differences? also I see some places saying the rns d doesn't play music cd's. can anybody shed light on this? the navigation is for AUDI A4 B6 2002 2004 I have a 2002 a6 I beleive it'll fit. Thanks for any answers on the subject I appreciate it.

I have a 2004 Audi S4 and retrofitted a RNS E unit. It was easy. I could strongly recommend to get the RNS E not the RNS D. The differences are big.
As for your question, CDs hold less information than DVDs. that means a CD established unit will require some number of CDs to get all the maps for the US. Also all these CDs will be outdated because Audi not uses this CD format. One DVD will cover the whole US with the RNS E.
As for the CD potential. The navigation in the RNS E uses the CD drive to read the DVD map disk. that means you can not listen to a CD and have nav simultaneously. But, this isn't as bad as it sounds. The RNS E unit has two SD card slots behind the screen. you may be able to purchase a 2GB SD card for $25. You simply put your music on your computer and rip it on to the SD card. All files will be in MP3 format so small. I have about two dozen CDs on a single SD card and it isn't all the way full still.
The RNS E is lots more pleasing to the eyes also.

The CD software can get costly. DVD Maps hold more detail and more area. CD's are not I believe that good. I use and have DVD's. Navigation is nice, but I rarely use it. Its nice on the Audi although. It should play CD's, but then again.
