I have a 328I / 2000. The check engine light came up and the code was."camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction" .I've changed the sensor, but the error isn't going away.
Also, the problem is when I push the gas pedal in highway it takes a long time to speed up, same problem at take off when I floor the pedal, speed up slow, then runs ok.
What do you think?

The Camshaft sensor can be dirty with oil.

I had a 318i E36 not E46 and the technician cleaned the sensor area and replaced the censor. The sensor was real cheap $25 and he gave me a break on labor.

The gas pedal issue may be related to the camshaft position sensor also. Take car to fix shop..

no. you have a E36, with your circumstance, if your DME has a big input fault, your car will run in failsfe, or limphome mode. check the wiring to the connector. this is a 5v ref. sensor. backprobe the sensor harness carefully, don't screw up pins . one should have 5v the other is a computer ref circuit ti ground. verify with the key on will set faults if disconnected if you may be able to plg it in and still backprobe it do so it should be right at front of the engine. happy hunting.

I have a 323i / 2000 made in Aug 1999 and it's an e46 model. The front kidney grill is attached to the hood.

The engine has a dual VANOS overhead camshaft design, with two camshaft position sensors one for the intake cam and one for the exhaust cam. I used a code catch tool from Peake Research check peakeresearch.com, about $100, and it said in my case, the input cam pos'n sensor was faulty.

I got the part at the dealer, changed it out and life is good. I can not recall if I had to reset the fault code or not, or if the code fault just went away but replacing the part certainly made the difference.

Hope this helps. you may want to verify with BMW forums for extra information. I also spent the $ to get the Robert Bentley book and recommend it.

that is because the computer can't see the camshaft position, so it affects the timing and injector pulse, may be a loose connection in a connector

There are two cam sensors on your car. One inlet and one exhaust. The common one that fails is the inlet one it comes with a long cable and plugs in under the inlet manifold . I could recommend just replacing both. On some models the engine control unit needs to be reprogrammed to widen the tollerence levels of the sensors once they're fitted.
