BMW Mechanic Says....?

Postby RobMc » Tue Nov 03, 2009 1:06 am

Ok so I just got my 1999 540i Serviced. Brought the car in because the thermostat went to 3/4 . Well, The dealer told me I needed a new Hood Release Cable, secondary Cooling Fan, R&,R, and a EFI Water Temp Sensor. Cost me 1175$. He also told me my I needed a new INTAKE VALLEY COVER AND END COVER substitute. Which could run me about 1300$. I told him I could not swing 2400 now, but I got everything done but the Intake valley stuff. Well, Before I went in the Check Engine light was on, and when I got the car, then paid for it, I left. And the light came back on.. I went back to the Service place, and the BMW expert told me the light was on due to Intake Valley cover. although he informed me that the check engine light was off previous to me to get there because I specificly asked him if it was off, and he said YES. am I supposed to and tell him to fix it? Or is there any other reason why the Light could be on? Could it be what he's saying, because when he gave me that reason he seemed like he tryed to create the smartest thing to say.... Iam new to BMW',s so PLZ give me good advice. thanks .

As long as the car isn't leaking coolant, I could not worry about fixing the valley gasket. If a check engine light comes on it's because of an emissions fault. This may be many things but is typically a gas cap or oxygen sensor issue.

As long as the car isn't overheating, you aren't going to hurt the car.

Hello I have had three bmrs and typically when there's any kinda work done this light will come on and you must get it reset by the dealer or you may be able to purchase the tool to reset it .I am not 100 sure but with mine they where that way with the oil changing sensor .I have a fiend that's a A1 mechanic and I'll ask him tomorrow for you it's to late tonight but if you want you may be able to email and I'll let you no good luck .In the meen time drive the out of that beast lol

Check your fuel tanks cap, on occasion the light comes on because of that. I myself had a E39 528i, not an easy car to preserve and it was such a ache in the a.

But I doubt 100 that the engine light is due to Intake Valley cover.
