Can alloy wheels break? Is dealer proivded extra protection

Based on the answers I have received, it looks that dealer suggested alloy wheel ptotection isn't at all necssary, unless I drive recklessly, hitting curbs and potholes at high speeds. anybody disagree with that?

As long as you do not hit curbs straight away at more then five miles per hour I do not think they'll break. do not ge the extra protection those ad on's are just a way to pad the dealers pockets.

The answer lies in the manner in which you drive. If you drive fast and reckless, eg. slamming pot holes, banging curbs, off roading in rocks, etc., then yes they can break, they're, after all, only byproduct of recycled aluminum cans or extruded aluminum. If you have ever seen the inside of one, you'ld see lots of little "air pockets", this meaning it's "cast" or made in a mold from molten metal. correct use will result in a lifetime of use, WITHOUT the need for "extra protection", this only adds to the cost.
Hope this give you the information you need.

Yes they can.
separately from poor driving/accidents hitting stuff the other because of failure is tyre fitters overtightening wheel nuts with air tools instead of torque wrench. This can causes cracks around mounting holes, then the centres fall out throughout turning British police had some 'incidents', and found reason Its hard to prove as it doesnt happen now. stay with car when you get tyres changed and see what they do or watch someone elses alloy wheels being done 1st, people tell lies on the phone
