Can any body tell me how to release the rear hand brake syst |

Can any body tell me how to release the rear hand brake system on a mk4 golf 1.4s?
I have the rear caliper off and I'm stumped I assume a kind of ratchet is stopping the piston from returning, to fit new brake pads. I worked on many brakes in my time, just never done one of these. Any help could be most appreciated.

You need a tool to screw back the caliper piston you may be able to get one from any decent motor factors.

They have to be screwed in using a special tool available from halfords, machine mart etc.

The best way to get the rear brakes back in without a tool is to use a big clamp. The way the rear brakes work is they turn as they go back in. The clamp will have the same effect. You may have to help turn the piston as you're tightening the clamp..there is a notch on the piston, use a screwdriver to push it. Hope that assists.

They are right.they must be screwed in.if you plan on working on your V Dub it has lots of special tools that you can not find anywhere, so go to your local dealership and talk to the service manager and tell him you're interested in buying VW tools.some are costly and some not but you'll have the right tools for the job and lots less stress to get it done.
