Can the engin from a 96 subaru be put into a 2003?

Will a 2.2 engine from a 1996 Subaru Legacy outback go into a 2003 Subaru WRX Impreza with a 2.0?

No I don',t think so. Pretty sure the heads won't fit the 2.2 N/A block. If you find a 2.2 turbo out of the somewhat earlier Legacy, then it should work. if it did, the N/A 2.5 internals won't handle the 13lbs of increase your car is programmed for for long.

Is the 2.0 engine broken some way, or are you just wanting the extra displacement of the 2.2?

The internals of a nonturbo engine are inferior to the internals of a factory turbo. If you ran the 2.2 with the factory turbo, you could ruin the engine.the internals aren't made to withstand the extra stress of the increase. You may be able to decrease your psi and the engine handle a light increase, but why take the time to do an engine exchange for less power?

If you talked a total substitute, the wiring will be different. And, your are trying to put OBD I in an OBD II car. Physically, Subaru stuff will fit and interchange, but the electronics will because annoyance.

If you're wanting more power, you may be able to put your heads and instake on a 2.5 turbo block. I dunno although, but I could imagine it could work. Not sure the change in compression percentage and displacement although.
