If you need a new battery it'll be under warranty.

Check the connectors for corrosion, a common problem on early Prius cars.
Let us know if it needs a substitute battery.Toyota claims that they have NEVER had to replace one. that is pretty hard to believe.

No, Toyota claims that a buyer never had to replace a traction battery. And as the other post says, the battery as all of the hybrid system is under warranty for eight years and 100,000 miles, so the cost is irrelevant. As I have said before, if the dealer gives a problem to that end, contact Toyota directly.they WILL foot the bill. But I could like to check out the car personally, because I have seen some number of that everyone was sure was a battery problem and it generally turned out to be something else. I have seen some replaced under warranty that magically worked on another problem that kept it from running till repaired. Gee, maybe it did not need that battery after all....
Good luck and God Bless.

Good call, Hov1free. When I read 2000 Prius, it sounded humorous but the light did not come on, but you nailed it. If that car wasn't built for US market and sold in US market, they may have a real problem on their hands. also, the diagnostic guides I have may not apply to that car. I wish you the best.

Where are you located? I believe that the 1st Prius sold in the U.S. is 2001 I had an early 2002, myself . The 2000 model was only sold in Japan, and there are lots of them out there that were bought second hand or in the "gray market," particularly in Australia. If you fit in that group, that could be a distinctive situation that could not be protected under the U.S. warranty laws, and the car really uses a different battery pack than was sold on the U.S. market. If, in fact, yours is a 2001 and sold on the U.S. market, and the warranty hasn't been voided in some way, then toyodave and dana1981 are totally correct, and I am surprised that you're running into any problems whatsoever, as Toyota is typically up front with behind its warranty.
There have been some times where someone posted questions about their Prius, only to find after acute inquiring by those trying to answer the question, that they talked about a 1997 2000 non U.S. Prius that they bought as a used car and that's a TOTALLY different situation than it could be were it the 2001 U.S. variant of the Prius.

The 2000 model year was first only sold in Japan. This is the 1997 2000 NHW10 Prius. Pretty evident, the display is in Japanese and does not have a touchscreen. As it was first only sold in Japan, sourcing new parts is hard for those holders who bought it as a grey market import now showing up in Australia, New Zealand, UK, Russia, etc. .
The NHW10 Prius used an older battery management system, and an older hybrid battery pack design less concentrated cylindrical cells as in comparison to the improved NHW11 and NHW20 Prius that have been sold internationally. The NHW11/NHW20 Prius' battery management and prismatic cell hybrid battery packs have been doing well, with only a rare instance of a battery failure. The NHW10, but. it is sadly a common fault on these grey imports. In Japan, with the correct chain of ownership and fix records, the hybrid battery packs on NHW10s are replaced free of charge, but outside the country, sourcing a pack is hard. Truthfully, I am surprised that you found a Toyota dealer wanting to touch the NHW10, as most outside of Japan don't have the Japanese module installed for their testing equipment.
There's lots of discussion on this English speaking list of NHW10 holders about starting issues what to check, like battery connections, the strength of the 12v battery, and cleaning some other sensors and how to go about sourcing or rebuilding their hybrid battery packs:
