Hey, the check engine light just came on and stays on on my 91 subaru. as well, when I turned it on it sounded a little like the belts slowed down a bit, and somewhat faltering. at least I think it was the belts, sorry I'm totally inept with cars. any way, anybody have any idea what this could be? Thanks

Hi, thanks for your answer. I just went out and checked the gas cap and it is on tight, then I tried restarting it again, and it's something faltering about wanting to start up I do not know if that means the engine is dying, but the little "power light" is blinking and it just feels, like the car isn't sure that it want's to startup hope that seems right. Anyway let me know what you think it may be, and thanks again.

Check engine light relates to emissions, but also may be serious.. oil, coolant.. etc.. so be sure there's oil and coolant.. but I think it's EGR solenoid..

I am not sure but I believe this year of Subaru has an on board computer test under the dash.. basicly a red L.E.D. light that flashes and the number of flashes give the code as to what the problem is and .. you know what the possible part is . or system that's having troubles.

try going too: usmbthe final Subaru Members Board join the site and look under the "Older Subaru cars" and post your question..

You have an EA 82 engine, most likely any way. Look at front of engine, just left of cener on the engine block you'll see this number or, EJ XX or what ever.. this information will assist.

These cars are very EASY to learn too work on. I own some number of a bit older then these and love them. but you must use up time and love on them at this age. so find a used Chiltons book on this year Subaru, join the club, ask questions and learn too work on them.

The 91 Subaru was made in 1990, making it 17 years old. It may be some things so you will have to supply more info. The 1st thing I generally propose checking could be the gas cap be sure its on tight, then check the air filter to be sure it is in properly and clean. Both of these could because the Check Engine light to come on, and the air filter could also change the "sound" of your engine.
