I have a 2001 3series BMW that isn't running and I can't start it'll must be towed. My question is am I supposed to take it to the dealer because they have the correct test equipment to check it out or can I save alittle and take it to auto fix shop that works on all models???

Bring it to somebody else other than the two you mentioned.

The dealer while properly equipped and trained to work on your BMW will certainly charge more. I don't blame them for having high charges for they have rightful reasons to do But the most of BMW holders can surely gain from lower charges.

The fix shop that works on all vehicles have little knowledge, experience, training and equipment to use in diagnosing and repairing

a BMW. So it's an exercise in frustration and a waste of time and money to go to any of them.

Look for an independent BMW fix shop. Most could be properly equipped and staffed to work on BMW',s and charges considerably lower rates than a dealer.

Remember that you may still update your question with extra data to help whoever you bring your car to in solving your car',s problems.

And should you be interested, post or email your place so that I or the other forum members can propose independents which have been found dependable in the past.
