Yes, one did. I had it. I can not remember the year. They only did it one year on the Beetle as it wasn't totally dependable though I did not have trouble with mine .
Also the Golf came with an auto.

Yes they did come in auto but they're hard to come by and they have a tendency to pop out of gear. If you want an old beetle, get a stick and teach her how to drive it.

I think the squareback did, and you could most likely change your bug to accept that trans
probably to get rare, although.

The old beetle my sister had a semi auto transmition. You had to manually move the stick through all three gears but there was no clutch.
Go figure.

i just saw one on ebay yesterday with the auto trans. a regular shift will be easier to come by although. they're also real easy to learn to drive, particularly on the beetle. the best beetle to get is the '67. it is the classic vw to have, collectible, and a way cool car to drive.

I had seven of them and never saw one. Not saying they didn't make them but you wouldnt find one in the country that made them. Was only made for lazy Americans that never bothered to learn a manual trans.
And yes I am American that knows a manual

They referred to them as semi auto because you could shift without using the clutch, but I never used this feature. I favored the plain 1600 dual port engine. The pancake engines require more maintenence & recurrent valve modifications. If you get one, do yourself a favor & never use Pennzoil, since it's a parrafin established product & it'll ruin a VW Engine. The 1971 models have better brake systems. Personally, I would not buy anything after that year. By the way, A BEETLE isn't the same as a BUG. The standard BUG is a more common product & easier to deal with on your from a maintenence standpoint.

There was an choice to have a two speed auto. I can not recall the years in question. they're most likely quite rare.

As far as I know, I have never seen a VW Bug that had auto transmission.

Yes, it was a “shiftomatic”. A two speed, with a stick you still had to shift, but no clutch.
They were problematic, and strange to get used to driving. When you grabbed the stick, it could drop in neutral, then when you let go, back into gear. Not real smooth in the action either.
Bugs aren’t exactly recognized for their power or speed and a two speed auto bug is dog slow. Plus the auto uses more gas than the manual.
Doesn’t make much sense to me to why you want one, and it didn’t to VW either, they only made small # of these primarily for the American market. nobody I know who had them were especially happy with them, they broke lots and that’s why you don’t see many around anymore.
Why annoy going through the trouble tying to find an old bug with an auto, you’re asking for a headache.
Part of the whole bug experience is that it’s a manual transmission car. It’s a pretty easy car to drive anyway. Many people learned how to drive “stick” in a Bug. It’s easier to take an afternoon in a mall parking lot and teach your wife to drive stick. Don’t know why so many people have such an aversion to switching gears on their own, there are more hard things in life.
