Differentials???
would a stock 97' GMC have the same 3.73 gears as my stock 88' GMC? they're both half tons

typically the differentials have a stamp plate on them that tells what make, model, and gear percentage they're. Otherwise, pull the cover and count the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide by the number on the pinion and you'll have your gear percentage.
Your axle will fit either pickup but you may have to change the yolks for accomdate for the different you joints or yolk connections flange mounted yolks or spline shaft . The shock mounts may also be different also.
