Does anybody els have transmission problems with their MDX? |
|
I have a 2002 MDX w/90k miles and the transmission is starting to slip and jerk, my mechanic says I need a new transmission, but it is $10K . Any experiences with this, or is it just me?

Here are the Honda models that have the notorious tranny problem:
1998 2001 and 2002 2004 Honda Accord V6
1999 2004 Honda Odyssey
2002 2004 Honda Pilot
1999 2003 Acura TL and CL
2001 2005 Acura MDX
These vehicles are generally variations of the same car and Honda Corp. has expanded the tranny warranty to 100K miles on them. Unfortunately Honda did not give the MDX the expanded warranty. you'll get a new tranny from Honda because of this. Sadly, I do not remember Honda making an auto for the V6 models that did not have problems. Hopefully, all of the newer models will not have the same issue. nevertheless here is an excerpt from wikipedia.com on the MDX's tranny:
All models use a five speed auto transmission. In some models, the transmission suffered important numbers of transmission problems that were alike to the problems with the Acura CL and TL. but, they didn't get the benefit of the free expanded warranty that the Acura CL and TL received.

transmissions cost nowhere around 10K. the most it should cost is 1.5K. I could propose going to a more dependable mechanic, like the real acura dealership to see how much it could cost. and if it really is 10K, which I largely doubt, then just sell it parts, and purchase a new one.

Find a good replicable Japanese shop and get a second opinion.
take it to a transmission shop and let them tell you what is wrong.
i could bet its the transmission pump that is going out and that is at the worst of all that could go Wong. but it's replaceable unless it burns up than your looking at a new used transmission for this SUV which could run about $400 $1000 for it. On a better note the slipping is telling you that transmission filters are clogged up and it needs to be replaced and the Tanny needs to be flushed too.
A good Transmission Shop can do this. I recommend a Japanese fix shop.

no have one of the same year with 80k and it still drives flawlessly. I could check other things. It may be liquid level, transmission sensor. I find it hard to believe that the tranny is going already.

Contact your Acura dealer. The transmission is covered under the warranty. Acura expanded the warranty on the transmissions to 100k miles. If you did not get the expanded warranty or are not the original owner you are still protected for 100k miles. The only exemption is if it has a salvaged title.
Sign up to Acura owner link and it'll tell you if you are MDX is included in the transmission recall. https://ahm ownerlink.com/login.asp?brand=acurahttps://ahm ownerlink.com/login.asp?brand=acura">https://ahm ownerlink.com/login.asp?.
Or you may be able to call the dealer and give them the VIN.
I had my transmission replaced at 70k miles. I bought the car used and there was no charge for to replace it. They gave me a loaner car.
Good luck.

My mom has a 2004 Acura MDX Touring w/GPS and 26K, and the last time I drove it there were no problems. She does not seem to talk about anything either.
