You have some alternatives. If your car stereo has a cassette deck, then you may be able to buy an adapter at places like Best purchase, Circuit City, Radio Shack, HH Greggs, etc. All you do is put the cassette adapter in, input the connector into your MP3 player, and let the music flow.
If you have have a CD player, or just a radio, you may be able to buy a FM Transmitter. They usually run on one or two AA batteries. Just sync the radio and transmitter, input the connector into your MP3 Player, and let the music play. It works by the MP3 music is sent to the transmitter, it's broadcast, the radio, if tuned in to the same frequency the transmitter is transmitting on, picks up the signal and pumps it through your speakers.
If your radio has a plug in I think they're called DIN connectors, then just buy a double ended DIN connector. Plug one end into your MP3 Player, and the other into your radio.
If your radio is pretty new with a CD player, then just purchase some CDs or rewritable CDs. Burn your tunes to the CDs and let the music flow. With the rewritables, you may be able to erase them, put different music on them and keep going.
I own both the cassette adapter and a FM Transmitter. The adapter will run you about $20 $30, depending upon where you live and where you buy it. CHECK THE NET FOR BOTH.even Ebay . I think I paid around $30 some years ago for the transmitter. With the transmitter, the better the quality, the better the sound. See if you may be able to find product reviews before purchasing one. I'm pretty sure you'll be PISSED if you purchase one, and the sound is crap.
I hope this helps you.

Yes you may be able to get a "cassette" gadget that slots into the cassette opening, then plugs into your MP3, or there's the radio transmitter that plugs into your cigar lighter socket, then to your MP3 and this then may be picked up by your radio, you'll find both on e bay or in a good electrical shop in the high street.

The only other way of playing mp3's is to get another deck that will play mp3's. When you make an audio CD for your car, you're converting those mp3 files to wav files, wav files can play on any CD player since they aren't compressed. Mp3's are compressed which means that a normal CD player won't play them. So my suggestion is for you to get an mp3 able CD player and have it installed. I have one and I have over 300 songs on one CD, I love it.

yes, as many have said you may be able to go with a cassett adaptor, that's if you have a tape player in you deck.
also look for a small imput, it'll appear like a headset jack, and it should say AUX, for auxilary. you need a cord that will have a headset plug at each end and you plug it in to the deck and the mp3 player.

you can purchase a wireless attachment that plugs into your mp3 player, then input the adaptor into the ciggie lighter, then tune your radio to a frequency that's broadcasting static or nothing, then you decide the same frequency on the wireless attachment and hey presto you have your sounds, a cheap one will be about 20 quid from argos, and I have one and it,s not bad, if you can not pay for or don't want to change your car stereo

The best way to do it could be to use an FM modulator, input the mp3 player into the FM modulator, then tune your radio into the station played by the modulator. you may be able to get an FM modulator from any decent car hifi shop
