I usually lock my hubs in the begining of winter and leave them locked till spring. you may be able to shift from two wheel to four wheel HIGH while moving at speeds under 55 mph. But don't attempt to shift from two wheel to four wheel low while moving. This will damage the move case. you may be able to shift back from four wheel high to two wheel while moving also. As I run down the road, if I hit ice, I just slip it into 4wheel high till the road is dry again, then back to two wheel high. The only thing it does when you lock the hubs is make the front axle turn, unless you put it it 4wheel drive. you may notice a slight decrease in MPG but no harm is done. In fact, I changed out from full time four wheel drive hubs and installed locking hubs on some number of vehicles over the years.
