Does porsche design the cars the volkswagen group makes? |
|
Porsche is really an engineering firm, that went into making cars as a sideline. The idea was the company should be run by engineers not by businessmen who doed what was needed to increase profits to the shareholders. As far as I know they have never tried to build a big factory that could crank out thousands of cars, that could have a price low enough to compete with the really liked cars in the market place. I Think the bodies are made by Karmann coachwork and many of the other parts are bought from Volkswagen and different other suppliers. If someone has enough money they hire Porsche to design a car for them. John DeLorean was about to hire Porsche to design his car, but they refused to do the job inside the time period in which he needed the car to be intended. Many other businesses have their cars intended by porsche, but this is kept secret. The engineers who worked for volkswagen may improved on Ferdinand Porches original design, but they failed

If you go back to the time before the car company existed, there was a consulting firm owned by Porsche that did engineering projects for car businesses, governments, etc. After WW2, when the Porsche car company has been founded, the former consulting business more of less stopped although it could resume in other ways years afterward . As Porsche became a mature company, they frequently maintained a much bigger engineering department than could be normal for the size of their company but, with recent cutbacks in the last five years or this is most likely not true . The big engineering staff allowed them to pursue many production established projects, also as race projects. To rationalize the big staff at non peak times, they could do outside engineering for most all businesses Harley Davidson is most likely most notable, which is why they classic Harley has such a alike looking piston/cylinder and alike engine note to the Porsche, big parts of the BMW X5. etc .
Porsche have nearly certianly done work for VW, although most like more in line with the design of a door handle, and airbox, etc. Not something in the neighborhood of a whole car. They were contracted to design a sports car for Audi in the early 70s, and they did. although Audi could afterward choose they didn't want the finished car which Porsche then marketed as the Porsche 924 .
In the early days, like many European manufacturers, Porsche outsourced their coach making to other businesses like Recaro and Karmann. but, this ended when Porsche bought Recaro's Coachwork business and Recaro retained only their seat making business for themselves . In fact, Porsche could at times take a alike approach to their production creating plants that exceeded their capacity needs and producting cars for some other German makes when it wasn't in use for Porsche vehicles primarily happened in the 1990s when Porsche cars weren't selling at projected levels . To be clear, since Porsche bought Recaro, they operated their own factory and built their own coachwork and they do have some big factories .
As for DeLorean. Porsche has been indeed the 1st company contacted in regards to building his car. A set of specifications were submitted, and Porscche responded that it may be done, but the price they quoted to do so in the planned time frame left John DeLorean with sticker shock as it was about ten times greater than the planned budget. DeLorean then moved to Lotus, which accepted the project. Shortly after starting the project, the specifications were considerably scaled back to meet the budget and schedule. Porsche didn't refuse this project, rather DeLorean refused to pay the amount obliged to contract Porsche to do this work.

No, the Volkswagen designers design Volkswagen cars.
You can see that the two car makes are different in designs.

Porsche owns 30.9% of vw but These days everthing is depending on the platforms the veh is using ie ford 500 lincoln zepher or the milan and mkz or the ranger and b2300 If it makes it better and cheaper they'll use it porsche used vw parts for many years see below you'll see that porsche uses parts from a lot of places ie audi, then there's the bosche systems in the cars it can be the same one as one changed to fit the specifications for a totally different brand ie traction control systems abs etc

Porsche only designs porsche cars. The toureg shares the same platform with the cayenne, but porsche didn't design the toureg. Why could they design a competitors car? It just doesnt seem right.
Porsche was a design firm at one point in time the 20s, however they have not done another businesses design work since.
Porsche recently bought about 30% of VW, but earlier didn't own any of them. Many people think porsche owns VW, but they don't.

Porsche does design work for many businesses but most are non disclosure because these other businesses do not want it recognized they have Porsche engineers behind their cars. A company that did promote that they really worked with Porsche on their designs are Harley Davidson for the V Rod engine. Most of this outside work is done in Weissach. it's a Porsche testing/engineering building.
Also, the coachwork for early Porsches was done by Reutter Carosserie. they're still around today but they only concentrate on making racing seats and airline seats. Their recognized by the name RECARO.

Porsche intended one or two cars for VW in the 60's and 70's. All other VW's are intended by VW. Porsche and VW share some engine parts and chassis designs.

That is a hard question to answer, Because the car businesses typically do not say their cars were intended by another company, although it happens. The Volkswagen beetle was intended by Ferdinand porsche, and the air cooled volkswagens made then are obviously derivitive of the beetle. The new breed of VW , Dasher, Rabbit etc. were copies of Audis, but was audi intended by Porsche? I think it may have been.
