The check engine light is for the emission system. Most probably its an oxygen sensor gone bad. Common on this car. Have it checked as if you let it go to long you may net to replace catalytic converter.

Always be worried when an idiot light comes on.
Take the car to find out why the light came on.
If the light is red in color, tow the car or get someone to diagnose it where the car is at. don't drive it because you may be able to because serious damage.
If it is amber/orange you may be able to drive it, but get it looked at to prevent more damage. Amber lights may also mean a sensor stopped working properly which will because inefficiencies.

yes if the engine light comes on and stays on there's most certainly a problem have it checked out asap before it damages other parts it can be just a simple fix or it may be a expensive fix you must weigh the alternatives I have had some number of cars that were not worth spending the money to fix them you must choose you may have to fix one problem to find another so do not be surprised if you must replace one part right after another good luck

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS TELLING YOU there is A PROBLEM WITH THE EMISSIONS. IF THE LIGHT IS A FALSE INDICATION, it is BEST TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT, OTHERWISE IT will not PASS INSPECTION.
