Explain the function of a piston in a petrol engine?

Well you have all missed the point. The function of a piston with it',s rings inside any contraption a bicycle pump is to act as a moveable seal inside a chamber.

It is only because it's a moveable seal that it can draw air or an air/fuel mixture into the chamber by virtue of the creation of a vacuum, compress the gases, then be driven down by combustion, then expel burned gases. The forces obliged to induct, compress and expel the gases are achieved by either other pistons or a flywheel.

It is only then able to rotate a crank by virtue of rods and consequently transmit forces towards propulsion.

The Piston is intended to compress the mixture of petrol vapour and air, previous to it being exploded by the spark from the spark plug.

The energy made from the explosion then drives the piston down the chamber of the cylinder, and the energy made by the explosion is translated into rotational energy by the crankshaft. Some energy is wasted.

The piston also performs the function of lubricating the system by transferring oil into the cylinders as it rises on the next cycle.

Hope this Helps.

The piston is connected to a shaft. When the fuel/air mix explodes the piston is forced down and makes the shaft rotate.

The piston is housed in a cylindrical bore. It can move up and down freely. At the top of the bore are valves. As the piston moves up and down, it sucks in the fuel/air mix, then compresses it, then at the right time the mixture explodes forcing the piston down. This rotates the shaft. As the piston comes up again it pushes out the burnt fuel so that a clean charge of fuel/air can me drawn in and the cycle repeated.

Therefore the function of a piston is to:

Kinetic action

1 move the power of the exploding fuel in a linear manner to a shaft that changes the motion to rotation

Combustion

2 Act as a suction pump to draw in fuel/air mix

Forcefully compress that fuel/air mix to maximize power

Take the power of exploding/expanding gases and be forced down

Act as a pump to clear the combustion chamber of burnt fuel

To give the combustion procedure a surface to act on. something to push against and viseverse the surface 1st acts on the combustion procedure by compressing it

The rings are there to seal the cumbustion chamber so that no force is allowed to slip past the piston.

The function of the rod is to move that energy to the crankshaft, and from the crank to the piston.

The function of the crankshaft is to transform that straight push into rotational force. again, also to turn rotational into straight, to act on the rod, which acts on the piston, which compresses the mixture

Its function is to turn the crankshaft, which in turn .turns the wheels. Gasoline explosions because the piston to run up and down, so turning the crank.

Butch

P.S. In the case of a steam engine the steam pushes the piston which then turns a wheel.

the function of a piston and piston rod is to move the energy from the combusting fuel in the cylinder down through the piston rod and on to the crankpower

Compression, then gets pushed by expansion.

It transfers the expansion force to the column.
