I just answered this same question this week, but it was on a 97 teg. So I will just copy and paste my answer. you may be able to check my profile and look at it also if you want.
lol I did one of these last week. it is not in the upper radiator hose. it's in the lower radiator hose. 94 01 have them in the lower hose, last gens had them in the upper.
And if you are still in doubt, you may be able to remove either one of the hoses and stick your finger in it. If you feel something and your finger can not go any deeper, that's where the thermostat is.

they are typically located where the top radiator hose comes into the engine. pull the hose clamp and the hose and look in there. its either there or on the other hose. it can only be two places

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine, the connector that it's attached to is bolted to the engine. to take off the thermostat, remove the two 10mm bolts.

The thermostat is at the end of the lower radiator hose.
You have to drain the liquid. be sure the car is cool, let it sit over night before beginning. On the bottom of the radiator there's a plastic screw. Place a drain container undernetaht, turn the plug and let all the coollant drain. Once completely drained, tighten the plastic cap and begin this below
1 be sure car is off and negative terminal on battery is disconnected
2 Use pliers to take off the lower clip on the lower radiator hose at the end that goes into the thermostat, not the end that goes into the radiator itself.
3 Pull the radiator hose off.
4 There are two bolts 10mm one on the top and one on the bottom. The top screw is pretty easy to reach wth a normal socket wrench. For the lower one, it's kinda hard. Its best to take off the top part of the air intake for more clearance.
5 Once you unscrew both of those bolts, the with a rubber mallet, softly tap and the male end where the hose connects will come off.
6 be sure you get a regular OEM thermostat and get an OEM gasket also.
7 Note where the old thermostat is located because you'll be replacing it in the same exact part when you put it back.
8 Reverse Steps one to 6
You should flush everything while the gasket/male end is off.
good luck
