I have thought about this before. Personally, I like the HHR's better. they're styled better and have the good ol' reliable name of a Chevy. do not get me wrong I like Chrysler.. but in this case I think the HHR is better.

HHR

Better quality, more functionality.

I like the HHR better because there's less waste of space in the interior and I believe it's cheaper.

I am also a hardcore GM fan.

check mileage ranking I think hhr will get more mpg and they both have about the same storage space

A Family member of mine has a P.T Cruiser and it runs and drives well, a bit wierd to get used to the window switches being in the front center of the dash. Drives well on bumpy roads but the stock alarm generally screws up.

they were intended by the same person,HHR is a little bigger but the PT Cruiser was around longer and will have the bugs worked out,

HHR is built on a better platform than the PT
overall has better quality

The both look a little silly, I believe as they're gimmick cars. The PT Cruiser is just a glorified Neon and they aren't well made. The HHR is a safer bet as it is made from tried and true parts and has more room.

HHR... I favor the body lines. it is a more violent look and I think it has more interior room.
