I have a BMW 520 and it looks to make a clicking sound whenever I start the engine and run the car but it stops when I come to a halt. Having searched the web, it looks to be an issue of changing the timing belt but am unsure how to change it or if it's the because. I could appreciate any help.

It's a 2000 model and I did take it to the BMW workshop and they said I could have to replace the smaller pulley and possibly the tensioner secondary pulley . Is there anyway I could do this on my own and also what do I have to do and get?

That ticking sound could mean you only have to have the valves adjusted..Do this 1st..The older BMW 525 and 528 cars have mechanical valves, not hydraulic ones. Have them adjusted. If the ticking remains, check the plug wires.Bad wires because curving which sounds like deafening ticking noises and you will notice bad idle conditions. If there was a problem with timing, you'd know it. The car could not run at all..

Yes you may be able to, but the amount of money you could use up on the tool kit to do it means that it could be better to take it to the BMW dealer who can take care of it. also, get rid of it and purchase a decent car.
