 How can I tell if I have a "4" VIN or a "6"? |

I am looking for parts for my 2004 Mustang and I do not know if it's a 3.8L or 3.9L. The webpage shows that the 3.8L has a "4" VIN and the 3.9L has a "6". I checked my VIN and it starts with an "I". The 1st NUMBER is a 4. Does that mean that I have a 3.8L?

On Ford Motor Company vehicles built after 1981, the eighth digit of the car Identification Number VIN designates the engine code. you may be able to input your VIN on the website below and it'll give you a in depth info on your car.

no the 1st letter or number in a cars vin isn.t the one for engine designation.
for the 2004 Mustang
the key for engine digit is the eighth one in the series counting from the front
as shown on link below
