How do I power an amp from a wall outlet? |
|
I upgraded my car system so I do not need my old subs and amp. I want have my amp power my subs, but I need the amp to be able to be plugged in to an wall outlet. I plan on using these for my football team's locker room.
Any ideas will be great. Thx

you'll have to get a regulated DC Power Supply able of delivering enough uninterrupted current for but much the amplifier draws. Look at the fuses that comes in the amp if you do not have the real plans to go by. If it has just one 35 amp fuse, be sure the power supply is rated at least 35 amps uninterrupted. If it has two 35 amp fuses, that is 70 amps, etc.
These may be quite costly. Another alternative is to get a deep cycle marine battery and charge it up, then use it till it is low. You typically can not leave a battery charger on it while it is working because chargers are not filtered well and you'll get lots of hum.

You will need a 12V power inverter to run the 12V amp, but a word of caution, be sure that the inverter can handle the amperage of the amp. The amp will draw some amount of current so be sure the inverter will do the same.

Well considering that majority probably the amp needs only 12V DC, and the outlet is AC. you'll need a converter to change the AC to DC and step it down to only 12V. I could check out RadioShack. I could but make a party box like we had when I was in the Marines. it is a self contained stereo system. You build a box that holds the speakers and sub. purchase a cheap head unit to install in the box and take some bracket to hold down a 12V car battery inside. be sure you seal the box good, but also be sure you may be able to get back in easily to take off the battery at some point. you may be able to get some cables to run from the battery to go through the box for charging reasons. just make expanded terminals that may be accessed easily. I would not leave but an inch sticking out of the box although. Charge it like you could jump start a car. I could get a regular car battery charger although. if the battery is dead you could still hook it up through someones car and jam away.
You could do also do it this way, but you could generally have to put in beside the car or tote the battery. it is like this. do not put the battery inside, but you make the outlet so that you may plug up a cable from the battery to the box for power. Makes the box a little lighter although. I think I could like the self contained, but that is just me.

A power inverter that could handle the amp's current needs could cost $$. an alternative could be to buy a smaller inverter and use an vehicle battery to supply the needed amperage. The battery will power the amp and the inverter may be used to charge the battery while the amp is in use most battery chargers have a "dirty" power output that will result in sound. You may have thought of this but a better alternative can be to sell the amp and buy a "Boom Box"
