How do I prevent the screen wash in my car from freezing?

Postby CARpenter » Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:22 am

Hi there

Everytime the weather turns to freezing conditions, the screen wash in my car doesn',t work. I',ve tried some screenwashes that state they keep up to ten degrees, but it definetely doesn',t on my car.

My car isn',t a new model it',s an R reg vauxhall corsa, but should that really make a difference?

I could be really greatful if someone could tell me on how to prevent this from happening.

Many thanks

D x

The part that's freezing is right at the nozzle, where the wash is exposed to the air. The alcohol evaporates and the water freezes. If you give the noozzles a fast spray with alcoholbased ice remover spray it should work again.

A good healthy amount of antifreeze in the washer bottle may do it, but some cars stupidlyplaced washer bottles than tend to freeze easily. I had an Escort XR3i that was terribly prone to freezing. on occasion you just have to shrug I',m scared. shrug

Antifreeze added will damage your paintwork and shouldn't be used,I think it may just be the nozzles or pipes feeding the nozzles that are freezing up, maybe your mixture is weak, use as indicated by information when everything else fails

You most likely have to put more in and dilute less but if there's moisture in the nozzles,it will be them freezing up not your screenwash and they should defrost after you',ve put the heater on......

you need a wind deflector on the bonnet hood the wind blowing over the nossles causes wind chill and the temp is really a pretty bit lower than the ambient temp.
