Most vehicles made after 1996 must be reset with an OBDII scantool. most parts stores will do it free of charge. you'll have to need to drive the car for about a week then before it'll pass emissions tests.

With an obd2 scanner, autozone will do it free of charge if your check engine light is on.

To reset ECU..
Remove battery cables.
Press brake for 20 seconds.
Reattach battery cables.
Drive around usually for a week to let the ECU to relearn.
I assume you are trying to get rid of a CEL, correct? If it will take ~4 warmup/cooldown cycles, with cycle time being about 30 minutes. This should have the readiness monitors set for emissions testing, if that is what you are going for. If CEL comes back, have the code read and fix the problem.
