No offense, but since you said "oil" and not "transmission liquid," I think you may be out of your comfort level checking and adding it. Just go to a full service gas station once and have them check it.
Edit: So as not to get flagged for giving a 'non answer,' here is the answer: You do not put any oil into a transmission.
Edit 2: I think it is kind of interesting that all of our answers six as of this edit got thumbs down.

well majority of people do not put oil in tranny's.it's tranny liquid and it is red.why not consult your holders manual or Toyota.

first: Noooo. don't put Oil In your transmission. Only Transmission liquid.
Second: a Toyota Echo? was it all you could afford? you may be able to do much better.

it only holds four quarts if you put any more than that in you'll blow the tranny

Have it serviced at a shop. You do not drop the pan and replace the filter. It should be pretty cheap since a tranny service is a drain and fill procedure on the Echo. If any mechanic tells you otherwise, they're liars.
