It does not save that much gas, with today technology the savings is minimal.

An auto is generally in drive, and generally having some kind of foward motion. The only thing holding an auto back throughout stop is the brakes. A manual is disconnected with the clutch depressed and throughout idle if you have the car in neutral, the rpms are lower than in an auto. The % of gas saved is minimal but better than nothing.

By straight drive I think you mean a regular shift, if that is the case, there are some number of reasons. first, with a stick the transmission will not slip. in an auto, unless you have a lock up torque converter, will slip to keep it from jerking when you take off. as well, a manual transmission weighs less because with an auto the motor has to turn more gears and a whole lot of liquid and run a pum etc. hope that answers your question

you really can not in town, because of all the stop and go driving, but on the highway you may be able to save a little, but the automatics built today get as good of mileage as the standards do,use to there was a big difference in them but the way the automatics are made now days, they will get as good of mileage as the standards do,especially in town, they,ll do better, stop and go driving is hard on gas either way you look at it, good luck hope this helps.

An auto is a viscuous drive, meaning it's hydraulic drive, robbing up to 25 HP.Only a total lockup converter won't rob HP.

You don't wind it out in the lower gears.
