How effective are Honda CRVs in Midwest winters?

Postby Audioooh » Tue Nov 03, 2009 1:21 am

I',m looking into purchasing something that could get around in the winters better. There are many hills in my area, and the Civic just doesn',t cut it.

I will be to get a used one. What year could be a good one? All of these CRVs hold their value well. I think the cheapest I have seen is like $7,000.

Is "REALTIME 4WD" a joke?

The realtime 4WD system really is a joke. 1st of all, it doesn',t engage till the front wheels start slipping so you are already just out of luck by the time it does engage. Second of all, it',s only able of transferring some abysmally small amount of power to the rear wheels. If you look around on YouTube you',ll find test videos where the engineers have the CRV on a light slope something like five degrees and take traction away from the front wheels and see if the rear wheels will power it up the slope. For the Honda AWD/4WD system it's nearly never able.

With the Honda realtime 4WD system you',re just paying extra money to add needless weight to your car.

Do the right thing and get a Subaru. They unquestionably have the best AWD system on the market.

it says in the manual that this car wasn't meant for offroad use. if winter conditions are offroadish, it may be a bad idea to get a CRV.

Realtime 4WD just means that the 4WD only kicks in when the front wheels start slipping. in common urban conditions, it',s never used.

I propose you attempt looking for a Subaru Forester instead, or an Impreza.
