996 as in the engine upgrade for the 911 Turbo 996 model, does the upgrade make that most of a difference to the standard 911 Turbo 996 model ?

Do you mean "Turbo S" specification X50 upgrade?
It has another 30bhp over the ‘standard’ 911 Turbo caused by bigger turbos, an engorged intercooler and a remapped ECU. It has minimal affect on performance, with the zero 62mph time dropping to 4.2s and the top end increasing somewhat to 191mph.
Porsche concentrated on the in gear acceleration, releasing another 80Nm 44lb/ft of torque to take the Porsche up to 474lb/ft 620Nm, and this means that the extra power is focused on ballistic catching up with moves, and also rising the already remarkable range of this 3.6 litre engine.
Originally the X50 power upgraded added £8709 to the 911 Turbo price. over that was £5k for ceramic brakes to create the S.
Don't know what it could cost now but I think I could keep it standard or look to exchange for an S, that should be more cost efficient in the long run.
Cheers
