How long do you think I could still drive my truck with a be |
|
How long do you think I could still drive my truck with a bearing going out in my manual transmission?
I have a 93 Toyota T100 4x4 truck. and it has recently for the past not many months had difficulty going into gear, particularly first gear and reverse. When I attempt to put it into reverse there's a grinding sound most of the time, and 1st just is on occasion some a struggle, but not too bad.
I was told that it isn't my clutch, but it's caused by a bearing going out in my transmission or the synchronisers.
I was told also that it could be costly to fix this than it could be to purchase a used transmission to replace it with and that it could be better to just drive it for as long as I could put it into gear while I looked for a cheap used transmission.
But my question is, how long could it go?
It is going to last more than probably lots longer than if the clutch goed out, you think?
I was told it may maybe be driveable for another year or more, but just be aggravating.
What is your opinion?? Why??
Thanks.~.

This sounds like a clutch problem more than a bearing. But either could last five mins or a year, based on the problem and the seriousness. Best bet is to take it to another garage and get a second opinion.

If it makes you feel any better, I drove my 1984 Corolla for two years and 20,000 miles with the same exact problem I only got rid of it because of serious body rust . Grinding reverse and hard first gear. Note that my first gear issue only occured while I moved, not while stopped. as well, I could hear a faint whining sound as I applied pressure to engage first gear again, while moving .

The problem is surely due to a bearing going out in your transmission, it has nothing to do with the clutch. I could advice you to change it and purchase a second hand one but in a good condition clearly. Of course the more you drive your truck, the more damage it'll because having that problem when changing the gears.
I can not answer that question about how long could it go. as it depends on how much do you use it and how much you have damage in the transmission.
Once the bearing is out, it'll not be driveable anymore. you have to change it as quickly as possible to avoid any other damage in the gear box or in any other part of the engine.
Hope you'll fix this annoying problem. Good Luck
