The stock Overland is the most lavish Jeep ever made so I could be cautious when taking it off road. It may be pushed quite hard with the Quadradrive II system but fording deep water may be hazardous if you don't extend the vent tubes on the transmission, axles, and move case.
The Overland has the 265 hp variant of the 4.7l motor so it should have more than enough power for light off roading. If you want to get extreme with the Jeep, you may think about re gearing though I think a Wrangler or Cherokee could be a better choice for serious off road driving.

The great can handle a just amount of off roading but body damage WILL happen when pushed too far. Stock water fording is only rated at 16 18" if I remember properly but they'll ford MUCH deeper water if your cautious {36"}. The 4.0 is a really torquey engine and the 4.7 is powerful also but the 5.2/5.8 engines are pretty doggy but adequate. If you want to increase its potential largely without a big investment just install 2" coil spring spacers {this will clear P265 / 31" tires} and "Lock Rights" {or any brand of lunchbox lockers} in both axles. About $700.00 and it easily tripled the abilities of mine .
