Well, on older cars like the Chev Vega which did this lots. some things could undo it. like changing gas station brands and octane level. It may be that.
Or, if you're one who drives to work and drives home on pretty flat roads at average speeds, it may be your engine is to get extra carbon build up in the cylinders which remain glowing after you turn off the spark plug but the glow keeps the engine going . A fast fix to this is taking for a "burn up a hill" pedal to the metal to burn out the extra carbon. Maybe if you're driving an auto, throw it in L when you're doing this so you don',t surpass the speed bound and get yourself in trouble that you don',t need. On a regular shift go up the hill in a gear or two lower and don',t shift up. you'll see black or black brown smoke pour out your tailpipe if this is the problem. there's also some additive called "Carbout" you may be able to add to the gas and this will assist clean out the engine.
Or, if your plugs haven't been taken out in a long time, maybe pull and examine, clean and gap them.
could attempt a change in gas 1st.
