The early BMW ABS systems had only Anti Lock Brakes. Over a period of some number of years, enhancements were made to the basic ABS system in different regions of performance like turning, accelerating, and in general handling. Each of these features is an outgrowth of basic ABS. it's possible that when one system detects a problem, it'll effect the other derritive systems and post warning light s on your dashboard. Some BMW dealers have BRAKE Diagnostic progams that can find out the exact FAULT CODE and lead you to the flawed part.

it may be time for a new set of pads & rotors.
or it may be as simple as adding some brake liquid just be sure it`s the right one. Or it may be you have some bad brake problems but i`d attempt the first two sugestions for now.

I had the same thing happen on my 2004 325ci, really used to happen here and there, could light up both then go away after a while, I just brought in for service and they had no idea BMW dealer they did but change the front pads and rotors.

If you have a DSC Controller like I do for my 740i then that may be the problem. I had this issue and when taking in the car it was found that my model had an issue with the DSC controller over a time period because the computer that controls this tends to get bad with heat. Have your service check the connection between the speed sensors and the DSC controller. They can diagnosis this. My DSC controller was $700 part from BMW and there's no generic part because this also must be coded to your VIN number.

Hope that assists.

Wheel speed sensor s may be the problem, but e39 five series your car has notorious DSC control unit failures. there's a substitute "kit" available from the dealer for your car so you would not have to replace the complete unit. But, after installation it does have to be coded to your car and the steering angle sensor adjusted simultaneously. This can only be done by a equipped independent BMW fix building with a GT one or Autologic machine.or the Stealer, er I mean dealer,

Hope this helps, good luck.
