Basically it goes on and off intermitantley and never stays on for long. Is there anything I can do, short of seeing a mechanic to fix or patch?

Thanks.

it is most likely going to be a low freon problem. What you may be able to do is go to Walmart or a parts store and purchase more R134 freon which kits may also be bought to install the freon in the system. you must figure out how much freon to put in, there is a a/c label under your hood that indicates how much. If your not sure and your a/c is blowing warm which means your a/c system has nearly no freon just put two lbs. freon in it. Trust me, it is safe, I have done it many times. you will hear from other people if you put to much in it'll blow warm which yes it'll but not with two lbs. What really is supposed to be done is to take your jeep to a auto mechanic and have him install the freon with some dye also. Whenever your a/c blows warm take it back to the mechanic who will use a black light to pin point the leak. common leak issue is a evaporator, the other is a condenser caused by stones hitting it. based on how big your leak is it can be better off taking to a mechanic or just keep installing cans on freon in yourself. despite they are both expensive. Hope this helps and good luck to ya..

this sounds like a low freon situation, take it in for a check up or put in a recharge can or two,

You are low on R 134A refrigerant, but don't JUST ADD TWO POUNDS of refrigerant. Use gauges on both high and low side. Indiscriminately adding refrigerant may be both dangerous and expensive. If the high side goes too high, compressor life is significantly shortened, hose life is shorter, you may be able to blow the safety break valve on your drier and it 90% of the time won't RESEAL. Now you must purchase a dryer, and evaculate the system. The recharge it.
Go to Harbor Frieght and for around $40 get a double gauge set and do this right. You aren't out of refrigerant but low.
To recharge properly if it's this low, you may have to find the low pressure switch on the drier and connect the terminals in the connector to keep the compressor engaged throughout filling.
Do this right, not halfway, just because some one else got away with a dangerous move doesn't make it safe or correct.
I could shoot for around 225 240 psi at 90 F ambient temperature and engine rpm at 1100 rpm.
Yes, you may also add a dye that's in special cans of R134A to help find a leak,,but if this is the 1st time in seven years it went down,,perhaps it just needs recharging.
Good Luck and Be Safe.
Good Luck.

If it's a blowing warm/cold problem, listen to Drag1line. But if it is blowing full blast one minute then low the next, it is most likely the blower. My delivery car is a '94 Blazer V6. When you could put the heater or A/C on full blast, it could die and not do anything. So you may need reconnect or replace the cable or sensor for the blower.
