You have to 'pry' the left over part of the seal out of its seat. When replacing the new seal, line the seal and place a part of wood over the seal as you softly start by tapping with a small hammer one end of the seal and get it to seat as you genntly tap the seal into its' seat. You may also place a small block of wood on the seal and protect the seal as you tap on the wood and not directly on the seal.
