don't be a fool man... The 2003 Jetta is depending on the Mk4 GOLF which is regarded as to be the most unreliable & dull to drive. don't waste your money on it. A Mk5 Jetta is much much better.

2003 VW Jetta is a nice little car. If you may be able to find one with a manual transmission and a Diesel engine the mileage is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. in general, they're constructed cars. I have heard some complaints about dependability compared to others, but it shouldn't be anything considerable that breaks. I DID read someplace about VW's with the 1.8T engine using some oil.like a quart every 1000 miles.and VW says this is normal. If its going to use oil.may also get the Diesel. Drive a Jetta.but before you purchase one, drive a Ford concentrate also. The concentrate was on 'Car and Driver' magazines ten best list for six years now. Same size car, just from Fords European Division. It should be a lot less costly in general than the Jetta but I believe just as good. Good Luck.

I own 2000 Golf GLS, which is the same car with a somewhat different body. It offers a hard drive and all the modern conveniences. But., after ~70,000 mi I have been spending ~$800 per year on repairs.

I, too, have a 2000 Golf GLS. I have 156,000 miles and use up rather little on repairs. but, after this many miles, my suspension is worn, and I expect that my clutch will go comparatively soon. Maintenance is key regular oil changes and plugs and wires when needed, etc.
Prior to this car, I had a 1995 Golf GL. I personally drove it for 180,000 miles and I gave it to my boyfriend when I bought the 2000. We replaced the clutch just before 200,000 miles and he drove it till the engine gave out around 250,000 miles this is a gasoline engine with standard transmission, not a diesel. He's hoping to replace the engine because he loved the car, too.
While we were together, my boyfriend did ALL the maintenance on both cars as well as changing the brake pads, put a sports suspension on the '95 and more, and he's not a trained mechanic. We just bought the maintenance manuals, plus he got some advice from a neighbor who is a mechanic.
Prior to the '95 I had an 1987 Golf GL, which I drove till 175,000 miles, when I bought the '95. At that time, I has been married to a mechanic so that helped with repairs. He got the car and sold it at some point after we divorced, so I do not know how far that one went.
In 1987 and 1990, I also worked in the service department for a couple VW dealerships. My observation was that the manual transmissions are more dependable than the automatics plus they are better on gas and lots of fun to drive so I recommend the stick shift.
Now, nearly eleven years and more than 500,000 miles after I bought the 1st Golf, I'm planning on to get a new car. The new Rabbits are cute, and I love the Eos, but my son's a teenager who plays basketball, so he and most of his friends are big. The Touareg is too costly and has low MPG, the diesel Touareg is apparently priced over $60,000. So I am looking at the Rav 4, Mazda CZ 7, Saturn Vue Hybrid, and other small SUVs, but I am nervous about going with something different. I feel so at home in those VeeDubs.
Of course, purchasing a used car is generally a risk so learn as much as you may be able to about its history and the last owner's driving behavior, if possible. But usually, I do recommend VWs.

The '03 Jetta is a really awesome car.. I own a '04 Jetta, TDI turbo diesel 1.9 L with five spd trans and not only is it a fast little car, but the fuel economy is excellent. it's to get between 46 48 city and around 52mpg on open highway. The salesman at the VW dealer where I got mine said he was to get 56mpg from his. There are smooth and quite on the road. comfy and fun to drive. After having this car for nearly two years, little went wrong with the car. I'm sold to the reliablity and dependability that VW has given me. attempt one out. you'll never want anything else..
