I own a 1999 Mazda 626 withV six engine. While, I'm driving the speed goes 60 from zero and engine light comes on.
I have an auto. as well, after the engine light came on, the car shut off. I was able to start it back inside five minutes. I was told it may be the speed sensor near the transmission or engine.

I agree. most cars now take this signal from the car Speed Sensor VSS and procedure it before it does nifty things like tell your speedometer what to show and different other calculations. ITs failure, or its wiring, could certainly show up as no speed and check engine light. I'm surprised that the engine dies although. Find the sensor and examine the wiring. If nothing looks frayed or burnt, go to a parts store and purchase a new one. screws on and off with a straight wrench or tool of your choice.

go to your nearest sears/NTB store and have your batteries checked. and if they tell you it is bad, it's bad.
I had same thing happen in my 97 Lexus and replacing the battery cured all those problems.
