You do not deserve/aren't respectable of a ///Motorsport department BMW if you can not drive a stick. Save yourself $10k and purchase a 330i. Or learn to drive a manual.

The M3 comes in both auto and manual transmission. if you aren't comfy driving manual you may want to get the auto. But a sports car just is not the same unless it's a manual tranny. That being said, a BMW M3 isn't the car to learn on. If I were you, I could purchase a less costly car that's a manual 1st to learn on. Once you gained experience and changing becomes second nature, then purchase the M3 manual. And by that time you may be able to choose that maybe the auto is the way to go for you. But it could suck if you bought the auto BMW, then decided you really wanted a manual.

It depends on which year M3 convertible you need. The last 2001 2006 M3 was available with two transmissions: A six speed manual, and a six speed sequential Manual gear box called SMG transmission. The SMG choice is generally a computer controlled manual transmission with a special gearshift and no clutch pedal. A conventional auto transmission wasn't offered on the E46 00 06 M3.

Since you indicated you can not drive a regular manual transmission, you may want to look for an M3 with the SMG transmission. it's easily identifiable by the chrome and aluminum studded gear shifter, selector switch and "SMG" emblem on the console. as well, the steering wheel will have two silver + and paddles near the nine and three positions.

Since a computer controls the clutch and changing on the SMG transmission, the driver can choose a "fully automatic" drive mode, which generally turns the M3 into an 'automatic' per se. but, its important be aware of that since it's a hybridized manual transmission, it takes some to get used to and will seem jerky to a new owner. Trying to drive an M3 with SMG like a regular auto car will result in a severe, jerky experience for you and your passengers. Gear changes will feel abrupt. but, after you get used to the way the SMG shifts gears, driving your M3 should become more thrilling, smooth and enjoyable. Good Luck.

Since 1995 all M3's if convertible or not has some form of auto transmission as choice. The 2001 and afterward M3's have the SMG variant. This is the formula one inspired paddle shift "clutchless" transmission.

There are lots of 98 or 99 auto convertible m3's for sale now and they're comparatively cheap.

The 2001 and afterward M3 are costly, I could wait till the 2008 new model v8 m3's come out before I go out to purchase a used m3. Once the new model comes out, the price of these 2001 + models will go down in price.

The SMG paddle shift transmission is good, but not great. The answer is slow and it isn't smooth at all. Lots of M3 holders with the SMG choice regretted to get it. There are rumours that BMW is working on a dual clutch/stage auto transmission much like the VW has. That one is suppose to be lots smoother.

In any regard, I could recommend not purchasing one with SMG as it's too rough of a ride. I could go with a 98 or 99 auto M3 or if you have $100,000, then wait for the v8 m3 with a quicker and smoother variant of SMG.

Good luck.

Why could you want to use up a lifetime without a great skill like that? Forget the M3, get the skill instead. it is free, it will last longer, and you will like it. Then you may be able to get the M3 after you get the skill.

Did inability ever come in handy?

As earlier stated above the M3 is offered with a auto SMG but don't get it twisted you'll have to learn how to drive this car also. To drive the SMG slow you must learn the shift points and shift settings of the car and shift the SMG manually for a smoother ride. The SMG will give you better resale. I have some M3 smg nearly new in stock. Check them out at milleniamotors.com we Ship

I drove both manual and auto M3. The difference is like night and day. I could learn to drive stick just to take pleasure in the added performance.
