Go for it if you have the skill. they're both bored out M50 engines so they should be direct substitute. Jack the car up in the front, disconnect the driveshaft, remove radiator, hood, engine cables, support transmission and undo transmission mount and engine mounts. Attach engine hoist + level, and gradually lift the engine and transmission out together. you'll have to use engine leveler to tilt the engine in violent angle to clear. If you never done this before, get someone with some experience to assist you out. The job should take about ten hours with two mechanics. It is not too hard, but it gets bit dangerous. Engine + transmission joint weight should be about 600 lb.

The easy way to recognize 330 engine is get the implanted VIN number from the engine and ask BMW dealer to look it up for you. They can tell you which model of the car the engine came from. You may also attempt carfax. History will tell you which car the engine came from. Or the engine doner should have the title.

If you must ask, I could not recommend doing it yourself. For the love of god, let a real mechanic do it.

Don't think about it. you will have a nightmare with the electrics. The tranny and the motor will not match. The computer will not work with the new motor. Do yourself a favor and leave it be. I have spent more money on BMWs than I care to admit. If you can not pay for to purchase it new or lease it with the warranty, then run like hell because you'll be married to the car.
