I want to install a V8 in an old car! Can I?

Postby Barsax » Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:23 am

So I want a fast car don't have enough money to purchase a new car. What I do have is a 1995 nissan altima that is about prepared to die.

Can I take it to a custom car shop and ask them to install a new V6 or V8 in old car? Of course I'll get better breaks if I can get the powerful engine.

Are there any notable concerns with adding a new engine in an old car?

I wouldn',t call impossible, but there's a pretty bit to think about. You',ll have to totally change the motor mounts, the computer, rebuild the complete suspension, rebuild and fabricate the complete drive train to make it rear wheel drive, because your standard four cyl. engine for front wheel drive is side mounted and v8 motors don',t do that . And that',s just the 1st things that popped into my mind. There',s plenty more than that to do. just, it could cost you way more to do this than it could to go use up a little on a late 80',s early 90',s camaro or mustang.

Notable concerns? Don',t be silly.

You want to use up a boatload of money on a car that wasn',t intended to do what you want it to do. I',m figuring cost of stripping all the old running gear out of it, changing the computer for the engine controls, strengthening the subframe and chassis to manage the extra weight, reconfiguring the front suspension geometry to make up for the added weight, changing out the engine mounts, etc, etc, etc.

Here',s what you do to save yourself some bucks on something that may not be worth it.

Go out to your car and open the hood. Then reach in and take the radiator cap off, and put it on another car.

"dont have enough money to purchase a new car"

Okay.you don',t have enough money to purchase a new car but you',re going to put a NEW engine in a banger altima? Do you know how much a new crate engine costs? Engine alone: 45k. Transmission, harnesses, exhaust, etc. Guess what happens when you go from four cylinders to six or 8?.? You go from one exhaust manifold to two your whole exhaust needs to be changed

Notable concerns: Logic and reality.

If there',s room for it, then it may be done. Unless you may be able to do the work yourself it'll be much costly than if you bought a newer car with a V type engine.

You can do that, but with the mods needed, and labor and all

it could be cheaper to just purchase a new car.

If you want something fast get a 1989 Turbo Trans am
